Cross on a high mountain


A faithful person

sees life from the perspective of trust,

not fear.

Bedrock faith allows me to believe that,

despite the chaos of the present moment,

God does reign;

that regardless of how worthless I may feel,

I truly matter to a God of love;

that no pain lasts forever

and no evil triumphs in the end.

Faith sees even the darkest deed of all history,

the death of God's Son,

as a necessary prelude to the brightest.

When I helped my mom pack up and move after my father's death, she kept repeating, "I feel like I'm losing everything."  I wanted to help her feel more comfortable with the process, and not as if she had no future to look forward to. Now that I'm a lot closer to the age Mama was then, I think I understand how she felt.  On one hand, I'm sure she appreciated the help my siblings and I offered.  She probably didn't want to deal with all the planning and decision-making on her own.  However, as a still-capable adult, it must have been hard to submit to her children's opinions about her life. Why Decluttering Isn't Working for You, and How to Do It Right

I have a friend who was hooked on all of the pretty online pictures of people's decluttered spaces.  Then she saw a video on TikTok by someone who decluttered her home in just one weekend, and got really excited about remaking her home in just a few days too. The very next weekend she went in with her boxes and bags, and sorted through her wardrobe, kitchen, and bathroom cupboards (all of those bottles and potions!).  She cleaned out her kids' toys, and took all of the packed-full boxes sitting in the garage to the Goodwill without even opening them up.  She couldn't remember what was in them, so she felt sure she didn't need them. It felt so good.  She felt so light, and really proud of herself.  She had the clutter under control, and knew her life would be so easy from then on. I know, I know.  I'm a heretic.  How could I possibly be so misled/crazy/plain stupid as to suggest that buying a house might not always be a good idea?  Isn't buying a house the American Dream and the Holy Grail of financial security? Please don't stop reading.  I'm not going to say you should never buy a house, just that it shouldn't be an unconsidered, default goal for your life. The United States has never been a perfect nation.  For almost 250 years, we've had a dream – an ideal of equality and freedom under God.  And even though we have never really lived up to that, the dream has not only remained alive, but has inspired others around the world.  Some were people who left everything they knew and came here, hoping to build a freer life with more opportunity.  Some were nations who changed from within to create their own just and enlightened societies. We've fallen short a lot of the time, but there has still been a light that shone out and made a lot of positive difference in the world and in people's lives.
